Moist and flavorful Asian Style Meatloaf flavored with hoisin and soy sauce. Delicious served with rice for a truly Asian taste.
Meatloaf is considered by many as a comfort food associated with childhood. It is a very homey and easy dish to prepare especially with ground meat from the grocery store. Just mix in breadcrumbs, eggs, and seasonings, pop it into a loaf pan, and bake for an hour. Steam or roast some vegetables for a side and dinner is served.
Curious About Meatloaf
Growing up in Malaysia, meatloaf was unheard of. We had many minced meat dishes like steamed pork and meatballs but never meatloaf. When I moved here, I was curious and had to check it out. Outside of home, meatloaf can be found at home or cafeteria style restaurants. I tried it and enjoyed it very much. So did my boys. To date, I have tried several versions and even posted an Eggless Meatloaf three years back.
Asian Style Seasoning and Glaze
Today, I am excited to share with you this delicious Asian Style Meatloaf, adapted from Allrecipes.com. This version calls for a mix of ground beef and pork. It uses hoisin sauce, soy sauce, minced ginger, and tomato ketchup for the seasoning. I added some garlic and swapped out the celery for green onions.
The hoisin sauce and tomato ketchup seasoning and glaze was amazing! I added half of the mixture into the meatloaf to give it a little more flavor. The meatloaf was moist and quite delicious eaten with rice. Mashed potatoes will also go nicely with it. I will definitely be making this again and I hope you will give it a try.

Biren says
Yes, it is! I actually like this version with the hoisin sauce better. It’s so tasty. 🙂
Jeannie says
This looks beautiful and delicious! I love meatloaf too although I try not to cook beef at home..I’ll have to substitute or use all pork.
Biren says
I think using all pork would work. Do let me know how it turned out.
Jeffnie says
Biren, can I substitute chicken meat for the pork? I am wondering if it’s okay or not?
MAureen says
The recipe doesn’t say what to add the cooked onions, garlic and ginger to. I assume it was the meat. I forgot to buy ginger but added ground ginger. It’s in the oven, I’ll let you know if it works.
Linda says
Thanks for pointing that out, Maureen. I have added that omission to instruction number 3. I hope you enjoyed the meatloaf. 🙂

I love this recipe! the first time I made it I followed it to a tee. the second time I mixed 1/3 cut hoisin and 1/3 cup catchup. I added all but 1/4 cup for glazing. I thought it added a little more flavor to the meat. I will make this recipe over and over! I hope you don’t mind my minor change….

I was looking for something different to make during the shelter in place. This was just what I was looking for! Even my picky 12-year-old LOVED it! I served it with homemade mashed potatoes and fresh corn. I used some green onion for garnish and it was gorgeous and delicious!

Sounds like you all had a delicious dinner. So glad the recipe turned out well for you.

I subbed all local grass-fed beef with Celtic sea salt and Bragg’s aminos vs soy sauce and this turned out scrumptious! Mahalo nui loa.
Linda says
I am glad you enjoyed the meatloaf. Definitely grass-fed beef if you can afford it. I was using Bragg’s Aminos for a while and really like it. 🙂

I found this recipe this morning and made it this afternoon. Very very good! I used 1 tsp. of ground Sichuan pepper instead of black pepper and I like the taste of it! I may make more of the sauce because it’s only on top of the meatloaf and I think it’d be better with the slices covered in it! I posted on my FB page my results as well as the link to this recipe. Thanks for a great recipe!

I’ve now made this one twice and I love it! I’m sure I’ll remember now the sauce of hoisin and ketchup mixed! I whipped up a very small batch of it to put on sandwiches and I made a wrap using up the last flour tortilla I had and I know it’ll be amazing! I posted on my FB page this recipe and a link back to it. So good! I know this sounds crazy but I prefer meatloaf to steak any day. I like my red meats well done with no pink and I know if you cook some steaks that well done you get shoe leather! Thanks for a great recipe!!!
Linda says
So true about well done steaks becoming like shoe leather. Hard to overcook a meatloaf though. Thanks for the link back.
